PICNIC 09 Amsterdam is here!

PICNIC 09 AmsterdamOne of my favourite European ‘crossmedia’ Festivals PICNIC ‘09 is only 2-days away now. The conference and festival takes place in Amsterdam from 23 to 25 September 2009 in a unique location, the Westergasfabriek, a former gasworks fabric.

PICNIC is Amsterdam’s leading annual international event, highlighting creativity and innovation, particularly in media, entertainment and technology. PICNIC brings together and disseminates the ideas & knowledge of the world’s best creators & innovators.

This year PICNIC has programmed a lot more mobile related stuff :)

On Thursday September 24 at 13H I will introduce a short but sweet PICNIC Mobile Bites. Five of the most interesting, creative, touching, weird or exciting applications in mobile will be showcased to the PICNIC audience in mini-presentations lasting 3 minutes each. The companies – selected through dotopen.com – include:

aka-aki networks GmbH (Germany)

Ball-IT (Finland)

Orbster (Germany)

RjDj (UK)

Soundwalk (USA/France)

Come and check it out and let us know you’re coming – hit the Count me in button.

On Friday, I’m chairing the jury for the Vodafone Mobile Clicks Awards, a real challenge this year since the quality of the startups is very good this year!

Besides the great conference program and speakers, I’m also looking forward to the The City as an Interaction Platform session with Atau Tanaka, Adam Greenfield and Greg Skibiski. Also interesting is the session about Mobile Engagement with Katrin Verclas from Mobile Active. And our friends at Layar are participating to the one-day Augmented City Lab. Not to be missed!

I’m definately looking forward to meet old and make some new friends, this is going to be fun! Feel free to ping me on twitter if you’d like to get in touch.

TechCrunch Talk on Mobile 2.0

TechCrunch Mobile 2.0 TalkThis year during the Mobile World Congress, there are some really interesting side events taking place exploring further the technical and business opportunities that the convergence of the mobile phone with other areas is bringing. While the mobile and web convergence is already going mainstream, there are still  a lot of unexplored opportunities to discover. Think connecting the device to your home media, the practical use in eHealth, connected cars and the many possibilities to explore in the fast growing emerging markets.

My buddy, Mike Butcher with TechCrunch UK and Ireland will be hosting a TechCrunch Talk event in Barcelona on Thursday 19th of February, 3pm-6.30pm on the Mobile 2.0 topic followed by drinks and networking. Venue in Barcelona will be announced somewhere next week.

The Barcelona TechCrunch Talk is aimed at bringing together the mobile 2.0 startup and VC community to debate the next phase of the mobile startup world. It will feature two quick-fire panel discussions with the hottest entrepreneurs and investors selected for their leading views on the market, and with topics focused around the following themes:

  • What will be the trends over the coming year?
  • What are VC’s looking for?
  • Can the power of the operators really be disrupted?
  • What value can be created in the mobile world in difficult times?

Tickets to the event are a nominal €25 per person – but only available to start-ups, VC’s and media. Tickets are available on www.amiando.com/tcmobile. Don’t wait last minute too sign up, there’s limited seats available.

Editorial enquiries about being on the speaker panels can be directed to Mike Butcher, European Editor, TechCrunch contactable at http://uk.techcrunch.com/about.

I’m definitely going to participate – not having to organise it myself for once ;-) and start exploring new ideas in our preparals for the next Mobile 2.0 Europe event scheduled before summer.
