I wanted to thank my readers, collegues, online buddies and friends for sharing some great moments with me this year. Some of you I just met but already left an impression, and others I enjoyed working together on innovative projects and events, or just exchanged opinion on the mobile phone and its interaction between people and objects.
One of the main drivers in my work is to innovate through collaboration, meet wonderful and diverse people that keep things interesting, dashed with spirit and surprise and truly unique… it really enriches my life.
From the Peer Awards in Barcelona, ¡nnovate!Europe in Zaragoza, TechTalk in Menorca, the Global Summit in Helsinki & St. Petersburg, Mobile 2.0 in San Francisco, Under The Radar in Mountain View and LeWeb3 in Paris, there were man great moments and events, not to forget the many MobileMonday events we organised this year in Barcelona and launched in Madrid … I enjoyed every bit of 2007.
I’m already looking forward to some new projects starting in 2008 and events like DLD Munich, Lift 08 in Geneva and another Peer Awards in Barcelona, stay tuned on mTrends!
Special kudos to Kelly and Lisa at gotomedia, Russell and Carlo at MobHappy, Caroline, Carles, Francesco and Gabriel, Jari and all MobileMonday chapter organizers, Carlos and his team, Debbie and her team, Peter and his team, Markus, Barcelona Media, IE Business School, Gregory, Mike, Peter and Daniel from Mobile 2.0 Conference, Steve and his team at Taptu, Prash, Raimo and last but not least my collegue bloggers and anyone working on innovative mobile technology.
I wish you all a very happy new year and a prosperous and successful 2008.
Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy!

3rd MobileMonday Global Summit in Helsinki
1 Comment Published by Rudy De Waele September 1st, 2007 in Mobile Music, Social Media, Operators, Mobile Marketing, Mobile Events, MobileMonday, Trends, Innovation, Startups, Global Peer Awards, Events
Next week I’m heading north to participate and enjoy the 3rd annual MobileMonday Global Summit! The event will take place on September 10th in Helsinki, Finland.
The 3rd annual MobileMonday Global Summit brings together leaders from mobile business. Around fifteen hundred participants from around the globe are expected to attend the conference held at the Wanha Satama Fair Center. In the same spirit as the monthly MobileMonday meetings held in over 50 hotspots around the world, the MobileMonday Global Summit brings together mobile industry influencers from down the street and around the world.
On Sunday - the day before the summit, we gather with most of the global MobileMonday chapter organizers and on Monday the Global Summit program opens with the Executive Morning with keynotes from some of the best thinkers in the business. In the afternoon there are various sessions covering three main themes: Mobile Entertainment, Mobile Marketing and Social Media.
I’m invited to participate in the Mobile Social Media Panel, including Kathie Legg, now at Yahoo, Gregory Norman from The Open Group and Bruno Bensaid from MobileMonday Shanghai, China. The panel promises an interesting discussion on this topic with views from Europe, US and Asia.
There is also additional excursion to Saint Petersburg, Russia. The local MobileModay Chapter will organize an event for decision makers, who are interested to meet local business leaders.
I’m really looking forward next week to meet the chapter organizers again. Since I decided to start MobileMonday Barcelona this has been a great ride organizing great events on a monthly basis, some with international reach such as the MobileMonday Global Peer Awards earlier this year druing 3GSM. I have met lots of interesting people from around the globe and the network keeps growing every month. Stay tuned for more news coming soon on new events here.
After the Saint Petersburg trip, I’m staying another day in Helsinki to meet with local start-ups. Anyone who would like to catch up with me, please get in touch by email (click my name in the sidebar on the right).
Disconnected Holidays
2 Comments Published by Rudy De Waele August 26th, 2007 in Mobile Lifestyle, Personal, N91, Nokia
While I’m most of the time always ‘connected’ with my laptop and/or my mobile phone, for this years’ summer holidays I decided to opt for a completely disconnected vacation. I felt a healthy need to get away for a couple weeks from a social media overload - and guess what? I didn’t miss my email or chat conversations, neither Twitter or Facebook, or other social media apps I regularely use…
It was more then 5 years I took such a long break and it was GREAT! Apart from some teenage “Can we go to check our email, dad?” hiccups, I managed pretty well to stay away from checking mails on my mobile phone or a computer… The last week I was actually completely disconnected in Formentera without GSM connectivity at all.
Last year, it was the first time I didn’t take an extra mp3 player with me for holidays, the Nokia N91 did just fine as a multifunctional device. This year, it was the first time I didn’t take an extra digital camera, since the Nokia N95 with its 5 megapixel camera has now reached a basic quality need for my holiday snapshots - the 2 megapixel iPhone doesn’t fill that need yet for me, sorry. You can check my Ibiza and Formentera pictures here.
The best part for me was our stay at Belgian friend Gilbert’s house in Formentera. On top of the cliffs of La Mola with a magnificent view on the Mediterranean Sea, completely disconnected with only a couple of boats passing by daily. The house, his painters atelier, and the garden house are all powered by solar panels only and provide enough electricity to comfortly host 10 to 12 people, electricity use is cut to a minimum whenever possible. Water is usually rare on Formentera so people use it with care: after every shower, the recycled sea water you used is captured and re-used for the plants, same with the water used for cleaning dishes, actually an ideal place for everyone who needs a personal global warming reducement training
No GSM coverage at the house - we needed to go to the village to pick up a signal, so you had that purely disconnected feeling you hardly encounter these days in the western world… alone with nature, daydreaming in the hammock, swimming in a Caribbean blue sea, lizzards eating rests of watermelon, the sweet sound of crickets, seeing the Milky Way again at night, the taste of local countryside chicken, well no more words to say I had a GREAT time! Anyone interested in a perfect place to rest, think, write or brainstorm give me a wink.
I had a strange feeling getting back the first day reconnecting, trying to find my ‘connected’ rhythm again, meanwhile I’m back on track, it’s going to be an exciting autumn with lots of new projects and events, more on this later here… stay tuned!

Interesting rebranding… from 3GSM to Mobile World Congress - check the new domain: mobileworldcongress.com, a sign that we’re finally entering a new and different global mobile space? I believe so looking at all the new players coming in this space, definately a good choice!
MEX 2007 report & presentations published

“Understanding Consumers and delivering exceptional customer service is just as important a part of the mobile experience as the latest technology and the size of the marketing budget, it can be a key differentiator for a business”… was a perfect kick-off quote in the presentation of Cliff Crosbie (see image left) at the MEX: the Mobile User Experience conference some weeks ago in London.
The report and all presentations of this unique and excellent conference are now available here (buy on-line for GBP 795). The report harnesses the combined knowledge of some 100 leading mobile executives who attended the MEX conference in May 2007. Delegates participated in a series of keynote presentations, panel discussions and breakout groups to define a response to the MEX manifesto. From this rich pool of creativity and exclusive research notes, Marek Pawlowski and his team have produced a detailed analysis of the industry’s approach to mobile user experience, a must have for anyone working in the mobile industry or for any internet, content or media company who has plans going mobile in the near future - if you haven’t, start asking yourself some questions
The report includes detailed info on each of the 10 topics covered:
- MEX Maps: graphical brainstorm of the conference’s response to the manifesto.
- Speaker’s response: written summary of the keynote presentation.
- Presentation slides: copy of the keynote slides.
- Discussion summary: written summary of the panel discussions and responses from the breakout groups.
- Research notes: thought-provoking articles and detailed research from PMN’s analysts.
- Stat Spot: selection of metrics relating to the manifesto topic.
For me personally, the conference was a really good experience, not only because of the zen environment the conference was held at (Wallaspace) but above all Marek and his team have done a great job in preparing this conference with a unique feel for detail and attention to create a good athmosphere, ideal to foster collaboration amongst the delegates - an exceptional mix of mobile telecoms industry people, design and other industry experts, startups, etc. A lot of interesting people with different ideas to share and open-minded to think about the challenges this industry is facing: to cope with a rapid and huge shift from ‘voice & text’ devices (mobile 1.0) to truly multimedia devices, soon always connected to the internet (mobile 2.0), to shift from walled gardens business models to open connectivity and services acces.
I’m not going to write down all my notes here from the conference, I enjoyed the interesting and thought provoking presentations from Cliff Crosbie (Nokia), Christian Lindholm, Antti Öhrling, Co-founder of Blyk, Mark Rolston (Frog Design) and the insiders view from Paul Nerger (Argogroup) and Al Russell (Vodafone).
The size of the conference also left enough room to meet and discuss with the other delegates, I met a lot of great new people! The idea of bringing all delegates together in smaller groups to discuss the manifesto and presented topics was a good idea too, this brought extra dynamics and conversations to the overall conference, an idea to continue exploring further in the future.
The 10 MEX Manifesto topics covered and the keynote speaker who inspired the discussions and research:
| Topic | Keynote speaker |
| Understanding the extent of the user experience, from retail environment to customer service | Cliff Crosbie, Global Director of Retail Marketing, Nokia |
| The evolution of community services and social networking in the mobile environment | Al Russell, Head of Mobile Internet & Content Services, Vodafone |
| Adapting mobile interfaces in response to the contextual user environment | Christian Lindholm, User Experience Expert |
| The role of pricing in determining the user experience and forming customer expectations | Stuart John, Director of Product Management, Ocean Observations |
| Leveraging innovation in input methods and content discovery to increase mobile service adoption | Matthew Menz, Head of Interaction Design, Motorola |
| Understanding the importance of user experience in delivering mobile advertising | Antti Öhrling, Co-founder, Blyk |
| Tearing down the walled garden and releasing third party innovation | Mike Wehrs, Vice President of Product Management & Evangelism, AOL Wireless & Tegic Communications |
| The evolution of the user experience as mobiles become our gateway for interacting with physical environment | Paul Kompfner, Head of Development, ERTICO |
| Measuring the user experience with quantitative and qualitative techniques to really understand customers | Paul Nerger, Vice President, Worldwide Sales & Marketing, Argogroup |
| Building personalisation into every level of value chain to grow margins and deliver an individualised experience | Mark Rolston, Senior Vice President of Creative, Frog Design |

MobileSunday Barcelona 2007
0 Comments Published by Rudy De Waele January 21st, 2007 in Women in Mobile, Carnival Of The Mobilists, 3GSM, Gathering Of The Mobilists, Announcements, Friends, Fun, partyStrands, Global Peer Awards, MobileSundayLast year, as a starter for 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Stuart Mudie came up with the idea to get together with some other mobile bloggers. We hadn’t decided on a place to meet until one week before the event, since we wanted to consider any good suggestion for a cool bar…
Stuart just anounced he activated another wikipage to prepare for another informal MobileSunday Barcelona getting together in Barcelona. Expect some mobile passionates, mobilists and founders of MobileMonday chapters mixed with some healthy dose of ususal suspect bar-hangers. As for any good gathering, women (working) in mobile are highly appreciated to join us for a drink to keep some healthy gender equilibre in our sector.
If you want to kick off your week at 3GSM by attending “an unofficial, informal and generally cool and funky gathering of mobile bloggers and their chums”, simply add your name to the MobileSunday Barcelona wiki and turn up on the night, place to be anounced later.
If you like football (soccer!), FC Barcelona is playing that night and there will be screens for you to watch the game, in a true Barcelona tradition. Before and after the match, we will have partyStrands running.
FYI: Stuart will not be present this time but since we like some magic once in while, we’ll intend to connect with him in a non-presential, 21st-century mobile kind of way. Stay tuned for more details.
