This week I’m going to spend most of my time in London starting with an event I’m really looking forward to, the Being Digital Mashup Conference on 10th June and organised by Simon Grice and Tony Fish.

The purpose of the event is to debate the commercial, investment and tactical issues that matter when delivering and designing digital services that rely on variety (mashup) of information, data & services. The event has seven themed debates on advertising, identity, content, location, social, retail and search across the important platforms of web, mobile and TV. In each theme there will be leading demo companies showing why it is real and how advanced some actually are. You can check the full speakers list here.

I am not sure if there are still tickets available (I believe the event is - or nearly - sold out). Registration is here.

NOTE: “Being Digital” is also the title of a great book, written by Nicholas Negroponte; it was the book I read in 1995 that spearheaded me inside the digital age!

Under The Radar - Mobility

On November 15, I’ll attend - as a judge this time - the Under the Radar | Mobility conference, organised by Dealmaker Media in the Microsoft Conference Center Building in Mountain View, CA. It is a unique chance to see, hear, and meet key players in the mobile universe, from the elusive carriers to the content developers, stealth startups and the industry leaders… 42 Startups will present their company/product/service in 1 Day! The event is also a forum for partnerships, dealmaking, business development, and growth opportunities.

To me, it’s one of THE important events on a global level if you’re in for new innovative ideas and companies in the mobile value chain space. If you don’t know the event, feel free to check my Under The Radar - Mobility 2006 conference review.

You’ll see a collection of companies in areas such as mobile content/video; social networking; voice services; marketing and advertising services; and a host of enabling technologies. From the industry experts and pundits to the company presentations and demos, you will learn about the future of mobility - its challenges and opportunities from consumer adoption to monetization of services.

taptu.pngIt has been a crazy two weeks… I just got back from the Mobile Web 2.0 Conference in London, a lot of great folks and impressions. More on this later here… But before that, I still need to wrap-up the MobileMonday Global Summit adventures from last week 8-)

Checking my mailbox, I received some private beta invites from Taptu, a new ‘open’ Mobile Search application. Founder and CEO, Steve Ives showed me a demo last week in Helsinki and I was delightfully surprised. I gave him a hard time finding some unusual music artists and the app always returned a lot of relevant info and song previews to listen to, all nicely designed in a super simple design interface - reminded me of the Google early days, but then on mobile, very promising…

In fact, Taptu bought one of the earliest mobile search apps around (I blogged about it 2 years ago here), and is thus, amongst others, crawling the wikipedia index for results. Steve came introducing his new technology - as he calls it Social-assisted Search, at MobileMonday Barcelona in April on a panel with Google, Yahoo! and JumpTap on Mobile Search. I remember thinking one needs a lot of guts and talent to start with such an adventure and such a competition in sight… meanwhile Taptu secured an A-round of funding and has 30 people working on the technology in Cambridge. Russell commented yesterday that it might be kind-a late to enter the Mobile Search market but I give them a fair chance.

Anyone can sign up for the private beta, but invitations will be released on-the-go during this month until public beta release during the month of October. So feel free to send me an email if you would like to receive a private beta invitation.

You can follow Taptu’s adventure status on their blog - http://www.taptu.com/blog/.

Following the response and feedback I got on the “Understanding Mobile 2.0” article I wrote at Read/WriteWeb a couple of weeks ago, I created a wiki space to start categorizing the so-called Mobile 2.0 companies.

You can acces the directory at mobile2companies.com.

I decided to use a wiki tool, called Wepaint, so companies can add their own information and keep it updated. You just need to sign-up to add your Mobile 2.0 company info page, you can add images, slideshows, video’s, and RSS feeds as well, and tag your page(s).

Companies can use the tool to keep the web community updated with latest news, elevator pitches, presentations of new products/services, etc. You can browse the wiki by category, by keywords, subscribe to the wiki feeds on new pages added or updated, comments and news, a lot of other stuff out there yet to discover.

The directory is far from complete, I just gave it an initial injection and added some companies I know to start with, so the best thing to do is add your page if you don’t find your company in there and update your page if you don’t like what I added, it’s a wiki, you know ;-)

Kudos to Carlo for helping me with the introduction texts.

Contact me if you would like to contribute to this project, to become a writer/moderator, to help develop the wiki, and for any suggestion and comments. I hope these pages will be usefull for the entire mobile value chain, spread the word!

Read/WriteWebKudos to Richard MacManus who offered me his space today in an idea to write some articles around the Mobile 2.0 subject to intend bridge the web 2.0 and mobile 2.0 communities. I’m kicking-off a mini-series of posts on the topic of Mobile 2.0, which will be explored more in detail on Read/WriteWeb this week.

“On the eve of Le Web 3 in Paris - and one month after the Web 2.0 Summit concluded - it seems like an appropriate time to explore the world of the mobile Web, a.k.a. mobile 2.0. There has been a lot of discussion lately on this topic, a good deal of it inspired by the mobile 2.0 event - a one-day event held on 6 November 2006, organized by Daniel Appelquist and Mike Rowehl….”

Continue reading “Understanding Mobile 2.0“, in which I tried to give an overview of what I currently understand as Mobile 2.0 and I included some links to essential writing done on the topic by fellow mobilist bloggers.
